The Loughgall Festival of Motorsort in aid of Diabetes UK (NI) will see a host of fresh additions this year, one of which is sure to sparkle!
Sponsored by Pinkerton’s Pork Produce, Festival 2013 is the only event of its kind and along with a great day of motorsport and family fun, the aim is to raise £10,000 for Diabetes UK (NI). Everyone involved is a volunteer and giving their time and expertise free of charge.
Armagh Lions President Bob Scott said, “With every passing year, the Festival has become stronger and new features are always welcome. Once a year, Armagh Lions and North Armagh Motor Club get together to organise a major fundraiser and key event in the rally-sport calendar. This year we are pleased to welcome a new feature which brings the craftsmanship of the classic with the sparkle of the new. Show & Shine is just what its name suggests. It’s all about making a car look in pristine, showroom condition. Over 100 cars polished to perfection will be on display at this year’s Festival each competing for the top prize. Show& Shine, comes to us courtesy of BHPni (Brake Horse Power NI).”
BHPni founder Cameron Taggart said:
“I am bringing something which will attract many petrol heads from across the country. This will be in the form of ‘Show & Shine’ car show with prizes for different categories. Car sites and clubs can enter a range of cars on a ‘stand’. Car clubs will need to book a certain amount of spaces for the amount of cars they would like to enter on the day. There will also be a section for cars that has been entered singly (driver entry on the day). The cars will be independently judged and prizes presented at the end of the day. I guarantee this will make a wonderful addition to the Festival of Motorsport 2013.”
‘
Along with exiting new features, the mainstays of the Festival of Motorsport are the historic rally and auto-test organised and controlled by the experts in their field – North Armagh Motor Club.
Clerk of the Course, Treasurer and founder member of NAMC William Fullerton said;
“This is the seventh year of the alliance between Armagh Lions Club and North Armagh
Motor Club in the running of the Loughgall Festival of Motorsport. The event, with its
emphasis on the involvement of historic and classic vehicles, has grown from strength to strength and comprises of a special stage rally which includes six all tarmac stages, each over three miles long, for historic rally cars, an auto-test for classic cars and a static display of classic road and competition vehicles.”
The Historic Rally Car Challenge has separate categories and classes for historic (pre 1967) cars, post-historic (1968–1975) cars and classic (1976 on) cars, but the Club also gives recognition to the obvious historic credentials of what are known as FIA Appendix K cars, which are permitted to run on low-profile racing tyres, and have created an additional category for them, although not eligible for the overall historic award. Any remaining spaces in the sixty car entry will be filled by more highly modified pre-1981 cars which compete for their own category and class awards.
There is also be new award this year – ‘The Spirit of the Event’ which is open to every single person competing, servicing, displaying or in any way taking part on the day. This will be presented by the lovely Miss Festival of Motorsport Emily Moffatt, and will be independently judged throughout the course of the day.
David Gibson, from event sponsor Pinkerton’s Pork Produce said, “We are really looking forward to the Festival of Motorsport 2013, and proud to be involved. Having attended the event in the past and watched it grow from strength to strength, we commend those involved in the organisation for their dedication and determination in hosting a great day out with tremendous excitement and experiences, all for the benefit of others, in this case Diabetes UK (NI).”
So the excitement is building for Festival 2013, and Loughgall Country Park will once more burst into vibrant life on Saturday 25th May!
The Loughgall Festival of Motorsport 2013 will host a very special feature, when it brings together a collection of ex-Bertie Fisher rally cars, for the first time.
Every year since its inception in 2005, the Festival of Motorsport, organised by Armagh Lions Club and North Armagh Motor Club, has raised £10,000 for a specified charity. This year, it’s the turn of Diabetes UK (NI).
Under the sponsorship of Pinkertons Pork Produce, and with support from Armagh City and District Council, the Festival of Motorsport 2013 returns to Loughgall Country Park on Saturday 25 May, and will host the Historic Rally Car Challenge (six all tarmac special stages), Apple Blossom Autotest (run by MG Car Club Ltd), Static Historic & Classic display, 4×4 off road power driving display (run by 4 Wheel Drive Club NI) Show & Shine competition, trade stands, kids entertainment, and lots more.
This year, there will also be an additional feature, which will see a very special collection of cars on display, having been sourced and brought together from all four corners of Ireland. The name Bertie Fisher is synonymous with rallying and 12 years after his tragic death, the draw to see the cars in which he competed is a strong as ever.
Feature organiser Cathal Hughes, from Armagh Lions Club said; “This is a unique opportunity to see a collection of cars driven by the undisputed King of Rallying, Bertie Fisher. We’ve gone the length and breadth of the country to source these classic motorsport gems and are thrilled to announce some of the most famous models have confirmed attendance. By bringing these cars together we are aiming to evoke the memories of an exceptional rally-driver and true gentleman, as well as that of his son and daughter, Mark and Emma who also died on that terribly sad day, 12 years ago in January.”
Ex-Fisher cars on show will include three Mark II Ford Escorts, the BMW M3, the Ford Orion, the Subaru Legacy and the one-and-only Subaru Impreza, complete with that original infamous registration plate – L555 FEL. There will also be Mark Fisher’s Seat Ibiza.
Cathal concluded, “It is good to know, in spite of a tragedy, the Fisher name still brings out the crowds, particularly in the case of the Loughgall Festival of Motorsport, which is run for the benefit of others, in this case Diabetes UK (NI).

As the chosen charity for Festival 2013, Diabetes UK will be on hand with information and health checks to assist in raising awareness on this ever-increasing illness. Fundraising Manager Naomi Brown said, “Diabetes UK cares for, connects with and campaigns for people living with diabetes, which is one of biggest health issues in the UK. Since 2005 Northern Ireland has seen 34% increase in those suffering from diabetes, which is the highest across the UK. There are presently 75,800 people living with this condition and up to 10,000 as yet not diagnosed. We need to get to these people.”
Naomi added, “We are looking forward to a great day in Loughgall and are delighted to be involved. Funds raised will remain in Northern Ireland and be used to support diabetes sufferers in any way we can.”
There is also be new award this year – “The Spirit of the Event” which is open to every single person competing, servicing, displaying or in any way taking part on the day. This will be presented by Miss Festival of Motorsport Emily Moffatt, and will be independently judged throughout the course of the day.

The Loughgall Festival of Motorsport will this year take place on 25th May with lots more exciting features, as well as the historic rally, autotest and static display.
Organised jointly by Armagh Lions Club and North Armagh Motor Club and run entirely for charity, the Festival of Motorsport is now in its seventh successive year. Each of those past years has enabled £10,000 to be raised and donated. Last year it was the turn of RNLI and their £10,000 paid for all the Northern Ireland crews to be fully equipped with new state-of-the-art lifejackets.
And 2013 will be no exception!
The Clubs wish to acknowledge the generous support and sponsorship from Burkes of Cornascreiebe over the past three years and are thrilled to welcome Pinkertons of Armagh as the new title sponsor and spokesperson David Gibson said, “We are pleased to announce our sponsorship of the Loughgall Festival of Motorsport 2013, and hope this is the first of many which we will be connected with. I have a great love of rallying, especially the historic cars, and feel this is a tremendous event to be associated with as it significantly promotes the local area as well as supporting Armagh Lions as, in conjunction with North Armagh Motor Club, they help raise staggering amounts of money for local charities.”
Along with the regular fixtures (Historic Special Stage Rally, Apple Blossom Autotest and Historic and Classic Car Display, there will be a host of fresh features as well as some specialities which will be a real treat for rally fans.
One of these is the last ever Works Ford MK2 Escort ever built by Boreham. This majestic gem was driven by Bjorn Waldegard on 1979 RAC Rally and is still in its original state today. It looks and sounds just as it did, and this is a prime opportunity to see it back on top form. You won’t be disappointed, and neither will one man from Clogher – Stephen McCombe – who bid fervently on a co-driver seat when it was auctioned at the Lions Charter Night in December.
Armagh Lions President Bob Scott stated; “I would like to formally thank Pinkertons of Armagh for their sponsorship as well as the kind donation of a co-driver seat. We are very grateful for this important piece of rally history and are honoured it will grace the fine grounds of Loughgall. Stephen will relish the experience of what it was like to be in a works car back in the hay-day of rallying. I cannot emphasise enough how much Armagh Lions appreciate the support and guidance of North Armagh Motor Club without whom this event simply could not take place.
The charity to benefit from the Festival of Motorsport 2013 is DIABETES UK- N. Ireland
For the Historic Rally Car (which includes Appendix K class historic cars) we propose to run six smooth tarmac special stages, each over three miles long and twisting through the magnificent Country Park and Manor Estate with central servicing adjacent to the arena display area, the location for the Historic and Classic Car display and Trade Stands.
The Apple Blossom Autotest will take place as usual in the farmyard area with support from MG Car Club Ltd.(Ulster) and the exciting off road performance driving display will be given by the Four Wheel Drive Club Northern Ireland ltd.
